DocArray - a data structure for unstructured data.Since this task is a whole search pipeline that deals with different kinds of data, we’ll use some specialist tools to get this done: In future posts we’ll look at how to actually search through that data. So that’s what we’ll focus on in this post. If you want to follow along at home (and maybe fix a few of my bugs!), check the repo:Īs anyone who’s spent any time in data science knows, wrangling the data into a usable state is 90% of the job. This is just a rough and ready roadmap - so stay tuned to see how things really pan out. Finally we’ll look at some other useful tasks, like extracting metadata.Next we’ll look at how to search through that index using a client and Streamlit frontend. After extracting our PDF’s text and images, CLIP will generate a semantically-useful index that we can search by giving it an image or text as input (and it’ll understand the input semantically, not just match keywords or pixels). For the next post we’ll look at feeding these into CLIP, a deep learning model that “understands” text and images. In this post we’ll cover how to extract the images and text from PDFs, process them, and store them in a sane way. This will be part 1 of n posts that walk you through creating a PDF neural search engine using Python: I know several folks already building PDF search engines powered by AI, so I figured I’d give it a stab too. With neural search seeing rapid adoption, more people are looking at using it for indexing and searching through their unstructured data.

Evaluate performance and any notes from previous reviews. Employee reviews take time, make sure you set aside enough room in your schedule to prepare before your meeting. If you are asking employees to respect your time and to be prepared for a review – you need to do the same in return. If you are not open to hearing how you can improve in your role, how can you expect employees to be? Being open to review from both sides allows for honest conversations that support everyone’s growth. Constructive feedback is a two-way street. Make performance reviews reciprocalĭon’t review employees without providing them an opportunity to review themselves, as well as you. Whatever your company’s policy is on performance reviews, make sure your employees are getting the feedback they need, as often as they need it. You may only do performance reviews as often as every month, or only annually. You will also need to determine how often you will be conducting them. Without either, employees can feel directionless in the direction their work should be going in.īefore you can even start evaluating an employee’s performance, you need to know what type of performance reviews are appropriate for your company and team. You need to make sure that employees have an opportunity to provide, as well as receive, feedback on their work. It is important to balance the frequency and depth of performance reviews. Know what type of performance reviews you are conducting Here’s how to succeed with meaningful performance reviews. We need to put aside our excuses of “Not enough time,” or the often mentioned “Candid conversations can be unpleasant and stressful.” As managers, we need to put our best foot forward supporting our teams. In addition to feedback, it’s how we perform employee performance reviews that can have the biggest impact on this issue. That’s a lot of employees who don’t feel like they have direction! In fact, 65% of employees would like more feedback than they currently get. Most of us feel that we don’t receive enough feedback on our performance from managers and co-workers. Overall, Music Rescue is an excellent recovery utility for anyone who has lost their precious tunes. It does however include backups of your album art. Ratings, Play Counts and Last Played info are not recovered, although these are hardly the most important things on your mind if you've just lost your entire music collection. There are a few drawbacks to Music Rescue. This gives you less control over the tracks you recover and instead simply recovers everything at once. There is also one other way to perform recovery and that's via 'QuickRecover'. That's it - once the progress bars have completed, your backups will be complete. For each source - whether it be podcasts, music or videos - you can configure exactly how and where they are copied before you hit the copy button. When you've selected the tracks you want to save, click 'Copy' in the bottom-right hand corner. You can also search through the track listings using the search box at the top. On the right you have the track listings corresponding to each one, featuring the rating, artist, track duration, etc. On the left, you have your device and data available such as Music, Video and Podcasts. Once you've connected your device, the main window is split into two areas, not unlike iTunes. The interface is elegant and it's almost impossible to go wrong because everything is so clearly displayed. Music Rescue is a superbly presented and executed program throughout.
The Adjuster allows the user to step into the stand while it’s flat on the ground, level the stand while climbing, and then level the stand at the desired hunting height. This closed front, sit and stand model takes the best design elements from Amacker’s Deer Thief ($230), its original climber, and adds enhanced adjustability. The Aluminum Adjuster Climber Treestand ($336) is Amacker’s (800-AMACKER top-end climber. It also has an optional Shooting Rail ($25). This causes cables to clinch the tree tightly for increased stability. Its open front design uses Flexible Fiberglass Arm technology, where the arms flex in while climbing. X-Stand Treestand’s (54 new X-1 ($300) climber is constructed of aircraft aluminum, has a 21x31-inch platform, and weighs less than 12 pounds. It comes with XT-6 red nylon bushings and washers for silent operation and has a platform size of 19.5x33 inches. The XPE zero-G dual-density seat and backrest offer all-day comfort. This closed front, sit and stand, aluminum-constructed climber features patented Gorilla Grip pivoting arms that can scale trees 8 to 22 inches in diameter and is matched with high-density foam climbing bars and arms to provide safety and versatility. The new Silverback Stealth HX Climber ($250) is Gorilla’s (87 lightest climber ever, weighing in at just over 20 pounds. Better yet? All Summit climbers, including the top-end Viper SD ($280), now come ready to hunt right out of the box. With a new slightly darker powder coating with black specks, these stands have a whole new look are also more slip-resistant for those damp days in the field. The final product has sound-dampening that, when hit, sounds more like wood than metal. What is it? Expanding foam strips inserted inside the sections of the platform expand when heat is applied during the powder coating process. All climbers now have impressive DeadMetal Technology, which is what the auto industry uses. To help celebrate its 30th Anniversary in fine fashion, Summit (25 improved all of its stands for 2011 with a couple of new features. Our feeling about all of the company’s Power series iPod and iPhone chargers is positive, but not more than that. You can decide for yourself whether this is an important enough reason to hold off on the purchase given the ways that wall chargers are typically used, our feeling is that most users won’t care. PowerBlock Dual instead provides enough power to refuel the iPhone when it’s not in active use, which is the same as any standard iPod charger. This isn’t a huge problem, but official “Works With iPhone” chargers are supposed to be able to supply 1 Amp to the iPhone alone-enough power to charge its battery even when two of its wireless antennas and other features are in use. There’s only one subtle issue with PowerBlock Dual: its USB ports each put out only half an Amp of power, for a total of 1 Amp. It sells for $5 less than the standard PowerBlock, but doesn’t include a USB-to-iPod cable Griffin calls it the “PowerBlock Dual Universal AC Charger” because its twin ports can be used for pretty much any sort of USB devices you may have, assuming that those devices, like iPods and iPhones, came with their own USB cables. PowerBlock Dual uses the exact same shell shape as a black PowerBlock, only elongated by half an inch and possessing two USB ports where PowerBlock has one. Late in 2007 and early in 2008, a number of companies began to show off wall and car chargers with two separate USB ports, so that a single charger could feed power to two iPods or an iPod and an iPhone at the same time. PowerBlock Dual is a somewhat more interesting product. Our review unit had no problem charging an iPod or an iPhone. Though $1 more expensive than the $29 Apple part on paper, PowerBlock is typically sold for the same price as or less than Apple’s adapter. Griffin offers PowerBlock in white or black versions, each with a gray center, and a more attractive design than the original PowerBlock. While Apple’s is a smaller rounded square, and has a detachable wall blade design that can interface with an optional, expensive set of international wall blades, the latest PowerBlock is only slightly larger in total volume, wide rather than square, and includes a power light missing from the Apple unit. The standard $30 PowerBlock for iPod and iPhone is Griffin’s latest alternative to Apple’s USB Power Adapter both are plastic in-home wall chargers with a single USB port on one side and flip-out metal power blades on another. Staff from technical, financial and administration departments visit the contractors’ office to check on their facilities. Contractors had to get registered with Shell to bid for contracts. I used to work for Brunei Shell and involved in contracting. If the PH government is doing the same thing, why did we change the government? If this is true, the MB should enlighten the public about this in Ipoh Echo and give particulars of the company and why it was chosen. The Finance Minister has said that the previous government gave contracts without going through the proper procedure of open-tender system. Looking at the state of the roads here, I wonder where that money is going. I received a WhatsApp message about a contract being given to a contractor, Bujang Selanggara, for maintenance of roads in Perak valued at more than RM1 billion. Is he also in business? It is the responsibility of the MB to explain to the people his role in MB Inc. I get calls from people asking what is MB Inc and two-dollar companies. The public does not want to see the new government making the same mistakes as the previous government. People are using their freedom of expression to question the government and keen to know what is going on. Things have changed after GE14 now people know they have the power to change the government. Echo has about 100,000 print readers and about one million online hits. The state government publishes a monthly magazine, but I wonder who reads it. Ipoh Echo can be used as a platform between the public and the government. People are using their newfound freedom wisely. Even housewives are talking about the next prime minister. The public can also provide feedback and make suggestions and request information through the paper. By publishing its functions and forthcoming events, the State Government can be assured that their message reaches the right audience. The paper is read by the who’s who in Ipoh and it would reach the right target group. My suggestion is the State Government should take two pages of advertisement in Ipoh Echo monthly and publish what is happening in Ipoh and the state. There were only three news items of the Kledang Hill clearing the first one saying it is illegal, second about the report made to MACC and finally the site visit by NGOs and media. There is hardly any news about Ipoh or Perak and even if there is something, it would probably be negative. I have been reading Straits Times and now NST from the time I can remember. Why is it so difficult to catch the people for a crime done in broad daylight? If I write down the various theories, I would be in trouble. The illegal clearing of Kledang Hill has opened a Pandora’s Box and the public have come up with a number of conspiracy theories since the MB has not given any sensible explanation and up till the writing of this piece, the culprits have not been caught. If Ani’s music has partially made my life, then what about the people who brought me an appreciation for those songs? The people that are unavoidably invoked every time one of them is played. How sitting in Lindsay’s room (really Laurel’s) and singing “Falling is Like This” I realized that I had met someone of a completely like mind.Īll of those people, just by invoking Ani DiFranco albums. How freshman year I sat on Alison’s floor and traded Ani concert stories as we carefully cut out the tray-art of my demo cd. How Ayelet put an Ani song on a mix tape before I even know who Ani was. But, as those songs passed by I thought of some of those other people. I measure my life in personal milestones and, in Ani’s case, in albums, but rarely by other people. It’s a strange concept to me who, by any account, is at least halfway centered on myself. Standing there on the trolley a line caught my ears, a line I’ve heard so many times before: I owe my life to the people that I love. DiFranco’s release dates as if their were birthday’s of favorite cousins, or political revolutions.Īs Ani releases an album nearly every year, it’s easy for me to associate every one with a certain bit of my life, as many people as there are songs strewn across her dozens of discs. In fact, I used to pride myself on being able to recite Ms. It’s the first one that I haven’t bought on (or before) its day of release. I obliged by only descending as far as Ani DiFranco.Īs the trolley whisked through its underground tunnel, I marveled that an Ani Difranco album came out on Tuesday. My iPod, almost completely out of battery power, didn’t seem as if it would want to scroll very far to find an album for my morning commute on Wednesday. I am in love with walking, and with singing, and with loving, and with you, and I would not have it any other way.įiled Under: stories, Year 05 Tagged With: mom A Picture Share! I refuse to, unless that same fear can illustrate to me what it is I love so much about the moments after and before it. I refuse to react to all things as catastrophic, or to live in the specter of fear – fear of the phone, or of anything else. Is her day so typically filled with a string of human tragedy that she has lost the ability to discern the difference? Does she find everything to be tragedic? Or, worse still, is everything so commonplace that her emergent response is a tacit reaction? I wonder if working in the hospital for so long has rendered her immune to the dramatic connotations of such terse messages. As the anxious knot in my stomach quietly dissolved into an afternoon case of agita (odgida), I calmly explained that though the hopelessly proprietary software might not work on her computer, the pictures would probably be BMPs or JPGs scanned directly from the negatives, and that she would definitely be able to open those I soon learned that, in reality, she was in Sears portrait studio, arguing with the receptionist because the software on their picture discs isn’t compatible with Windows XP (presumably holding up a line of screaming children all the while), and she called me to consult. She had to avert a national nuclear disaster in less than 24 hours of consecutive screen time, less commercial breaks. A school bus had overturned on the 95 South, and she was triaging the children until the paramedics arrived. She was trapped at gunpoint in a daycare center, unable to stay on the line for long. She had found a baby abandoned in a dumpster, and needed me to alert the media while she whisked it to CHOP to have it nursed back to health. Where had she found screaming children, and what was I supposed to do about it? Naturally I imagined the worst. Not only was the lack of verbosity completely unbecoming of her, there were children screaming in the background all the while. The feeling owed to an emotionally draining weekend, and from this side of Sunday it seemed to me as if every phone message was a loaded gun waiting to fire a little bit of conflict or a touch of bad tidings – waiting to sidetrack me with more bad news or bad karma.Īs a result, when my mother left me a message on both my cell and desk phones with terse instructions to page her without delay I was concerned. I’m not so afraid of it now, but for a few minutes this morning I felt as though I was right back in that place. For a few years of my life I despised the phone, somehow convinced that picking it up could only result in unfortunate news (or telemarketing). A bigger tree will require longer straps for safely hunting from a tree stand. Consider the type of tree you are most likely to hunt from when looking at securing straps. You will want to find a stand that allows you a comfortable sitting position but is also stable enough to easily stand or get into the best stance to help make your shot. When shopping for a stand, consider whether you are using a rifle or a bow, or even both, and pick a stand that will give you the safety to make a comfortable and accurate shot. Finding a stand that offers the best ergonomics and shooting position depends a lot on the type of hunting you are doing. Remember that if it's raining or snowing, moisture will accumulate on unprotected gear, increasing the weight. You want to make sure that the stand is designed to handle the weight you plan, so include your gear, you (don't lie!), and any other weight you are bringing. The design of a tree stand is critical to getting the most comfortable experience on your next big game hunt. Good treestands are items many hunters don't think they need until they realize how much they like hunting deer from a protected position. Treestands are one hunting product you don't want to shop for based on price. Good quality treestands let hunters stay in one place for long periods of time, allowing deer to naturally move into areas they like to forage, and providing help to the hunter searching for that trophy buck. A tree stand gets the hunter up above the line of sight of a deer, making it more difficult for the animal to notice you. The animals have keen senses of smell, almost as though they are hunting you while you are hunting them. Treestands are great for hunting wooded areas that are difficult to conceal yourself from deer. Let's get into some of the features you should be looking for when you buy a new hunting stand no matter what type of game you like to hunt. We can help by explaining some of the features different types of stands use that you will like. With lots of items that all seem similar, picking the best deer stand isn't easy. Sifting through the different products out there can be a challenge because each company is trying to get you to buy their product. When you are looking to purchase a tree stand for your next deer hunt, the key features you need to consider are quality of design and materials, ease of portability, and safety. Some are intended for the lone hunter, while others are suitable for more than one hunter at a time. Tree stands come in lots of styles and designs. Portable tree stands can be carried into the perfect spot, then hoisted and secured in a tree. What is a Tree Stand?Ī tree stand is a device hunters use to gain an advantage over wily deer. Today, we will share with you some of our favorites and help you decide what features you need from your hunting gear. Choosing the perfect tree stand for your next deer hunting adventure is complicated. |
